2015 Oscars Here’s What I Missed

Its Oscar night and I can’t remember the last time I watched the show from beginning to end. I care, but I don’t care because in the end it’s just a waste of time. Besides for those who don’t win Oscars get $165K worth of stuff, now whether that is just the 16 acting nominees or all the nominees, that isn’t a bad thing for them, until it wreaks havoc on next year’s income tax return.

I don’t know if Neil Patrick Harris is bombing or if he has made a “Gone Girl” joke in his monologue, I don’t know and I really don’t care (again) or do I? Seeing the winners for the other categories like best short feature or the technical categories always gives me a tiny spark of hope that I can make it to a writer’s room, or be on a film crew, if I just applied and sacrificed here and there and who knows maybe I am headed that way or not. So far I can’t even write a crappy screenplay so touché to Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman & no they are not the worst in the business, maybe Orci is the most smug when he had to step down as director for the 3rd “Star Trek” film, now they are at the mountain top for great films like the first “Star Trek” film, then screamed all the way down face planting into “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” now that is not a 1000% their fault, there was an impending writers strike, however it is still a terrible time being played on a loop somewhere at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba trying to get some type of answer for something out of someone. So ok fine like I said not 1000% their fault, although what’s their excuse for “The Amazing Spiderman 2” I’m sure they would’ve given the Spidey suit nipples, if Joel Schumacher hadn’t done that to George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell.

So let’s see how I did in my predictions:

Supporting Actor Prediction JK Simmons “Whiplash” Winner JK Simmons “Whiplash” Not necessarily a no-brainer, his character could’ve been or would’ve been a one note verbal abuse machine in someone else’s hands but not JK congratulations sir. 1/1

Costume Design Prediction: Milena Canonero “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Winner Milena Canonero “The Grand Budapest Hotel” A fantastic movie that just might net best picture, although I think “Birdman” should win. My guess a semi-shot in the dark and she gets a sparkly new 4th trophy congratulations Milena 2/2

Make up and Hairstyling Prediction: Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou, Mark Coulier Guardians of the Galaxy Winner: Frances Hannon and Mark Coulier “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Ok so it does take great skill to turn Tilda Swinton into a 90 year old patriarch, as opposed to well creating a Marvel Universe for all the kids. Congratulations to Frances and Mark. 2/3

Foreign Language Film Prediction “Leviathon” Russia Winner “Ida” Poland Apparently caused the first twitter explosion of the night when the director of the film couldn’t take the hint about being played off, or something like that I don’t know I didn’t watch it. Congratulations Poland your off the schneid. 2/4

Short Film Live Action Film Prediction Parvaneh Talkhon Hamzavi Stefan Eichenberger

Winner: The Phone Call Mat Kirkby and James Lucas like I’m an expert in this, or any other category Congratulations Mat and James 2/5

Documentary Short Subject Prediction: White Earth Winner “Crisis Hotline : Veterans Press 1” Ellen Goosenberg Kent and Dana Perry these are the categories you can clean up with in your office pool and I went against my instinct. Congratulations Ellen and Dana. 2/6

Sound Mixing Prediction: “Interstellar” Winner “Whiplash” Craig Mann, Ben Wilkins and Thomas Curley Ok a solid win and maybe my pursuit of being a sound mixer should be put on hold. Congratulations Craig, Ben and Thomas. 2/7

Sound Editing Prediction: “Interstellar” Winner “American Sniper” Alan Robert Murray, Bob Asman So glad I didn’t have money riding on this thing, so glad I picked “Big Hero 6” for Animated Feature……D’oh Congratulations Alan and Bob. 2/8

Supporting Actress Prediction Patricia Arquette “Boyhood” Winner Patricia Arquette “Boyhood”

Hey I’m back in it. Congratulations Patricia 3/9

Visual Effects Prediction “Interstellar” Winner “Interstellar” Paul J. Franklin, Andrew Lockley Ian Hunter and Scott R. Fisher. Wow I am on a streak once again congratulations Ian, Paul, Andrew and Scott 4/10

Animated Short Film Prediction “Feast” Winner “Feast” Patrick Osborne and Kristina Reed. Come on a story of a puppy who nearly eats everything and doesn’t age throughout the film? One magical puppy. Congratulations Patrick and Kristina 5/11

Animated Feature “The Tales of Princess Kaguya” Winner “Big Hero 6” yeah I should’ve gone all in on the Mouse house, I just thought, well thought wrong clearly it would’ve gone different. Congratulations to the people behind that flick and if you could please steal the Oscar from “Brave” and give it to Rich Moore for “Wreck It Ralph” I liked “Brave” but Rich Moore is a film maker from Oxnard High School and I want to be another film maker from Oxnard High School 5/12

Production Design Prediction: “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Winner: “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Adam Stockhausen and Anna Pinnock. It might be a Wes Anderson night, I wonder what he is going to do for his next film, please let it be “The Royal Tennebaums 2” Congratulations Adam and Anna 6/13

Cinematography Prediction “Ida” Winner “Birdman” Emmanuel Lubezki. Or the category where Roger Deakins hasn’t won yet, why? I picked “Ida” because it is in black and white, the only reason, I should’ve gone with “Birdman” oh well the unexpected virtue of ignorance and all that. Congratulations Emmanuel 6/14

Best Song “Everything Is Awesome” Winner “Glory” – “Selma” John Legend and Common

Yeah why did I think a super catchy fantastic song would have a chance over a song about well I don’t know what it’s about, it basically feels like this should’ve been U2’s last year for the Nelson Mandella movie, well I will let it go. Also Congratulations Common and John Legend 6/15

Documentary Feature Prediction: Finding Vivian Maier Winner “Citizen Four” Laura Poitras Mathilde Bonnefoy and Dirk Wilutzky well I went against my instinct again, thinking that “Citizen Four” would be to popular, fool me once shame on me, fool me twice, oh shut it. Congratulations Dirk, Mathilde, and Luara. 6/16

Original score Prediction: The Theory of Everything Winner “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Alexandre Desplat well Alexandre was nominated twice in this category and I thought for sure there would be some awards spread out for everyone and I was wrong shocking I know. Congratulations Alexandre 6/17

Original Screenplay Prediction “Birdman” Winner “Birdman (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”  Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr. & Armando Bo. Feels so good to know I’m right and I feel for Michael Keaton who should’ve won, I know the guy played Stephen Freaking Hawking. Congratulations Alejandro, Nicolás, Alexander and Armando. 7/18

Adapted Screenplay Prediction “The Imitation Game” Winner “The Imitation Game” Graham Moore, I do want to be a writer and I should know my writing categories. With both categories, I’d be happy regardless who won, although it would’ve been film geekerey tnt if Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson won in their respective categories, not taking anything away from your Graham Congratulations 8/19

Director Prediction “Birdman” Winner “Birdman” Alejandro G. Iñárritu I wonder if Richard Linklater or Ethan Hawke will ever win, you never know. Both “Birdman” and “Boyhood” were difficult undertakings in and of themselves. Congratulations Alejandro 9/20

Actor Prediction Michael Keaton Winner Eddie Redmayne “The Theory of Everything” Would it have killed the actors branch to have at the least a tie? Also so much for the whole “Norbert” theory of winners losing out on the trophy because of their follow up projects, for Redmayne “Jupiter Ascending” and Julianne Moore “Seventh Son”. Put that urban myth to rest yeah Eddie Murphy should’ve maybe won for “Dreamgirls” but then again maybe Alan Arkin’s role in “Little Miss Sunshine” was what it was. Congratulations Eddie Redmayne not Murphy 9/21

Actress Julianne Moore “Still Alice” Winner Julianne Moore “Still Alice” it was kind of a given the only threat was Reese Witherspoon for “Wild” besides Moore should’ve taken home the statue for “Far From Heaven” Congratulations Julianne 10/22

Best Picture Prediction “Birdman” Winner “Birdman” Well I almost went .500 or did I forget a category. This year’s nominees were semi-predictable not really apparently. Did the right film win? Who knows it is a matter of taste, I really preferred “The Grand Budapest Hotel” over “Birdman” but I picked “Birdman” due to the degree of difficulty. I am super bummed that Keaton did not win it. Life goes on, there are still a few weeks of terrible films to skip and wait for summer or April 3rd when the physics defying “Furious 7” makes its mark.
